On November 20th, 2013, Google will shut down its Checkout product.
- Merchants selling digital goods may transition to Google Wallet for digital goods
- Merchants selling through Google-hosted marketplaces (e.g. Google Play) will be unaffected
- Merchants selling physical goods will need to switch to third-party alternatives
Ever since PCI compliance became mandatory in 2008, WebStores Ltd has advocated using hosted payment solutions for selling products on the Internet. While Google checkout fit this criteria, it appears as if there is simply enough other competition out there that Google is putting its resources elsewhere. In other words, PayPal won this battle. However, there remains other viable alternatives including Element Express, Evalon, 2Checkout, and FirstData.
If you are using Google Checkout to take payments on your website now and need to transition to another payment method, contact WebStores Ltd at 877.924.1414.
