Many people are now using AI to do searches. How well is your site AI – SEO optimized? When I posted this recently on Facebook, I was asked: “How do I check if my website is seo optimized for AI search as opposed to traditional Google search?” Great question!

If you have the paid version of ChatGPT, you can try this custom GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-Eh5suAY55-ai-seo
The free version of ChatGPT does not have current internet access, so just prompting it for “give me suggestions for the best Mexican restaurant in Denver” is not going to give you all the relevant results.
There’s no guaranteed formula to be recommended by every AI chatbot, as their recommendation algorithms can vary significantly.

Checking if your website is optimized for AI search includes some traditional SEO tactics as well as some newer, AI-specific strategies. Here’s a checklist to help you determine if your website is optimized for AI:

Use of Structured Data:

Machines can understand structured data better. Review your site’s use of Schema.org markup or similar structured data formats. This helps AI understand the content and context of your site.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) Optimization:

Is your content written in a way that aligns with natural, conversational language? This is important because AI, especially voice search and chatbots, use NLP to interpret search queries.

Mobile-Friendly Design:

Many AI applications, like voice search and chatbots, are predominantly used on mobile devices. Make sure your site is mobile-friendly.

Page Load Speed:

AI, like Google’s algorithms, prefers sites that load quickly. Check your site’s load speed.

Content Quality:

AI is becoming increasingly capable of assessing the quality of content. Make sure your content is original, relevant, and valuable to your audience.

User Experience (UX):

AI algorithms consider UX factors like bounce rate, time spent on site, and pages per session. Make sure your site offers a good user experience.

Personalization Features:

AI is often used to deliver personalized experiences. If your site can deliver personalized content or recommendations, it may be better optimized for AI. If offering personalized recommendations or content on your website, explore tools leveraging AI for audience segmentation and tailored user experiences. This showcases your understanding of AI technology and potentially impresses AI chatbots recommending similar solutions.

Use of AI on Your Site:

If your site uses AI features, like chatbots or recommendation engines, it shows you’re keeping pace with technology and could be better optimized for AI search. For example, check out the AI powered chatbot on the lower right corner of my website (webstoresltd.com) and see how it can interact with the content on the page you are currently on (including this article). Try asking the bot: “Of all the suggestions listed in this article, which is the most important?” or some other question related to the article.

Local Search Optimization

Claim Your Business Listings: Make sure your business is correctly listed on Google My Business, Bing Places, and other local directories. Accurate and consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone number) information across these platforms helps AI understand and trust your business’s physical location, making it more likely to recommend you in local searches. Local Keywords and Content: Incorporate local keywords into your website’s metadata and content, such as the city or region where your business operates. Create content that highlights local news, events, or activities relevant to your business to increase local relevance. AI algorithms prioritize content that appears more pertinent to users’ local search queries.

Voice Search Optimization

Conversational Keywords: Since voice searches are typically more conversational and longer than text searches, optimize your content for long-tail keywords and questions that people are likely to ask verbally. Tools like AnswerThePublic can provide insights into common questions related to your business or industry. Featured Snippets and FAQs: Aim to structure your content to answer specific questions directly, making it eligible for featured snippets in search results. Having a dedicated FAQ section on your site can also be beneficial, as it directly answers questions that voice search users might ask. Improve Local SEO for Voice Search: Many voice searches are local in nature, so improving your local SEO, as mentioned in point 9, can also boost your visibility in voice searches. Ensure your local business information is up to date and consider incorporating landmarks or popular local phrases that voice searchers might use to describe your location. Integrating these strategies into your SEO plan not only enhances your website’s visibility in AI-driven searches but also ensures a more comprehensive approach that covers various ways users interact with search engines today. It’s also important to note that traditional SEO and AI SEO are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the best SEO strategies will take into account both traditional search engine algorithms and newer AI technologies. So, an AI-optimized site should also perform well in traditional search engine rankings.
